Woodcarving
I used to practice woodcarving for at least one week a year, over a few years at Hjerleid in Norway. I enjoyed trying out a traditional form of crafts. My grandfather used to do some woodcarving, and I wanted to try it out in order to understand the craft at a more detailed level.
Through woodcarving I was able to learn a lot about wood as a material. When you are doing a detailed woodcarving, you end up paying close attention the grain direction of the wood, in order to make the perfect cuts. And when combining the carving into a whole, you learn about different ways of doing seamless joints between several pieces of wood.
